PARASITE CONTROL
Don't
forget about hot weather and fleas and ticks! We have
online information on fleas and ticks
and a general summary of the currently
most effective product types for protecting your pet and your family from
fleas and ticks.
HURRICANE SEASON--ARE YOU PREPARED?
With hurricane season in full swing, it's
important to make sure your family is prepared--and that includes your
pets! Make sure carriers, collars, and leashes are easily
accessible, and plan for your pets to evacuate with you. If your pet
is not vaccinated, call us for an appointment to update necessary
vaccines. Infectious diseases can become a big threat after a
disaster, and if for any reason you need to kennel your dog during or
after a storm you will need proof of current vaccinations. Also,
consider having your pet microchipped to increase chances of a safe return
home in the event you are separated. Make sure your hurricane
supplies include a 2 week supply of food and water for you and your
pet. For more comprehensive guidelines on making sure you and your
pets are ready for whatever this hurricane season may bring, visit our
Hurricane Checklist.
DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY ENHANCES IMAGING
POSSIBILITIES
We are proud to now offer Digital Radiography with
our new ScanX machine. Computed radiography allows us several
options that traditional film does not. The x-ray image is scanned
directly into a computer. We can use software to enhance the
digital image to aid diagnosis. We can also easily send the image
to a specialist instantly if a consultation is required, or burn it to a
CD. We are excited about the new opportunities this technology
will bring to our practice.
"NO MORE HOMELESS PETS" OFFERS CHOICES
FOR SPAYING/NEUTERING
There are many benefits to spaying and neutering our
pets. These procedures dramatically reduce the chance of your
companion developing certain health problems. Also, many
undesirable behaviors are eliminated or reduced--including marking and
spraying, fighting, and roaming. Eliminating the opportunity to
reproduce also helps to manage overpopulation.
Now, it is easier than ever to find a program that will help you do
what's best for your pet. If you qualify for Medicaid or other
government assistance, your pets may be eligible for low-cost or free
spay or neuter surgery. No More Homeless Pets In Alachua County
has partnered with Spay Florida to provide access to these programs
through a toll-free hotline. Simply call 888-SPAYFLA
(888-772-9352) to discuss your family's needs and qualifications.
You will be matched with the program that is right for you!
As always, Operation Catnip continues to offer free spay and neuter for
stray and feral cats. For more information on this successful
program, visit
www.operationcatnip.org or call 352-380-0940.
REGULAR DEWORMING -- THE BEST WAY TO
PROTECT YOUR PET AND YOUR FAMILY
Parasites such as roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms
can cause unpleasant health problems for your cat or dog. But did
you know that people can accidentally be infected with the same parasites?
In humans, they can cause problems that range from intestinal upset to
blindness or even death. There are many ways that contamination can
occur, and your pet may not show symptoms of infection until it is too
late. That's why preventive deworming is the best protection.
We recommend regular deworming with Drontal® or Drontal® Plus to remove
the broadest range of parasites and their eggs most effectively.
Should you regularly deworm your pet? If you
answer 'yes' to any of the following questions,
contact us today to develop a preventive deworming schedule that will best
protect your pet from the dangers of intestinal parasites.
1. Do you take your dog on hunting, fishing,
camping, or hiking trips?
2. Do you live near open space, or anywhere where foxes, coyotes,
and/or raccoons may frequent?
3. Do you let your dog "free roam?"
4. Do you let your cat outdoors?
5. Do you have small children (eight years or younger)?
6. Do you currently have a puppy or kitten?
7. Does your dog regularly visit a dog park?
8. Do you walk your dog in a community area or an area well-traveled
by other pets (such as an apartment complex common grounds)? For more information, you may visit

LASER SURGERY IS AN ALTERNATIVE FOR
MANY PROCEDURES
We are proud to offer laser technology as a safe, comfortable alternative to traditional surgery. Lasers
reduce trauma because laser energy does not crush, tear, or bruise,
reduces pain by sealing nerve endings as it moves through tissue, and
reduces bleeding by cauterizing small blood vessels. As a result,
laser surgeries often have a reduced risk of infection, less
post-operative discomfort, and a quick return to normal activities.
A laser is ideal for procedures such as removal of cysts, warts, and
tumors. It is also a very effective tool for routine surgeries such
as neuters and spays. We have had such success using the laser for
declawing that it is now the ONLY method we use.
For more information, you can visit www.petlasers.com,
or ask our doctors if a laser would be right for your pet's surgery.
